St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew convened an urgent meeting of the senior government officials via Zoom. The purpose of the meeting, which was to assess the current weather situation and to ensure that the preparedness measures are firmly in place.
PM Drew also conducted a pre-strike meeting, which was held at the NEMA Headquarters, which involved all the relevant stakeholders.
The meeting saw the attendees Acting Prime Minister – Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, Permanent Secretary in Ministry of National Security – Glenroy Blanchette, Chair of the National Emergency Management Agency Board – Claricia Langley-Stevens and National Disaster Coordinator – Abdias Samuel.
As a part of the preparedness activities for the season, NEMA held simulation exercises and the government then continued to prioritize disaster preparedness through investment. It is necessary, as the Caribbean expected a highly active hurricane season in year 2024, which owes to the climate crisis.
Prime Minister said that the safety of the people is the highest priority and he encourages everyone to take all the necessary precautions as they continue to monitor the development of the weather system.
The meeting by PM Drew, took place on Sunday, August 11, 2024 and was led by the National Disaster Coordinator Abdias Samuel. He provided Prime Minister with an in-depth update on the current status of the weather system.
Coordinator Samuel outlined the potential impact on the Federation and detailed the preparedness actions, that are being implemented under the National Disaster Management Framework. These actions are designed to safeguard the population and minimize any such disruptions that may arise from the development of the system.
While giving his remarks, Prime Minister Drew expressed his sincere gratitude to all the attendees for their prompt response and dedication to prioritise the preparedness and response activities for the impending weather threat.
PM Drew emphasised the importance of proactive measures and coordination among all the relevant agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis.
He said that the safety and the people is the highest priority. I commend everyone is involved for their commitment to these critical preparedness activities.
Drew added to his statement that it is essential that they should remain vigilant and take all the necessary precautions as they continue to monitor the development of the tropical system.
Following the meeting, the government urged all the citizens and residents to stay informed through official channels and to follow the guidance, provided by NEMA and the other relevant authorities as the situation unfolds.
