Egypt Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry receives phone call from Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs

Egypt: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry received on Saturday, December 17, 2022, a phone call from Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov.

Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the call tackled various aspects of bilateral relations between both countries, including the course of implementing economic projects undertaken by Russia in Egypt.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson added that the two Ministers discussed a number of developments on the regional and international levels, where Minister Sameh Shoukry was keen to present Egypt’s position towards various developments in the Middle East and informed the Russian Minister of the results of the communications that Egypt is conducting to promote stability and peace in the region.

The telephonic conversation between both ministers took place after Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, President of the 27th Session of the Parties to the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference COP27, delivered a video message during the session on climate action at the Ministerial Conference of the G77 (Group of 77) and China, held in New York on December 15-16.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Director of the Public Diplomacy Department, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that Minister Shoukry was keen during his speech to review the results and outcomes of the Sharm El-Sheikh conference that enhance global climate action at various levels, especially the “Sharm El-Sheikh Implementation Plan” that heralded a new phase of climate action which focuses on turning pledges into realities on the ground.

In addition to establishing – for the first time – a fund to finance loss and damage, and to promote international adaptation and mitigation efforts, besides mobilizing climate finance and maintaining global temperature rise at 1.5 degrees in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

Minister Shoukry added that what was achieved during COP27 attests to the relevance and effectiveness of multilateral action, explaining that the Egyptian presidency of the conference was keen that the conference delivers tangible and balanced results, despite the multiple challenges witnessed in the current international context on many levels, topped by geopolitical tensions and the global energy and food crises, in addition to the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.
