Egypt: EM Yasmin Fouad seeks follow up on solid waste system projects

Egypt: The Minister of Environment, Yasmin Fouad, with Major General Hisham Amina and the Minister of Local Development, held a meeting at the headquarters of the Local Development Ministry to follow up on the executive position of solid waste system projects in the provinces.

As per the reports, the meeting witnessed the review of the executive position of the new municipal solid waste system regarding infrastructure projects ongoing on the land of the governorates in the three phases of the system, such as safe health cemeteries, stationary and mobile mediation stations, waste recycling plants.

In addition, it was also discussed that raising the efficiency of several circulation lines in some factories, contributing to improvement at the level of the hygiene system and the return of the aesthetic shape of the main and sub streets in cities, centres, neighbourhoods and villages, in the end, the satisfaction of the citizens with that service provided by the state.

During the meeting, both ministers shed light on the importance of continuous evaluation of the performance of private sector companies working in the waste management system in some provinces was emphasized to preserve the state’s rights in contracts signed with such companies in cooperation with the two ministries of environment and local development.

The reports have stated that the executive position of the sanitation system in Cairo Governorate and the part of the waste-to-energy projects that will be carried out on the territory of the governorates, headed by the project planned to be held in the Abu Rawash area of Giza Governorate.

“The strategic partnership with the alliance of military production companies of investments of about 125 million dollars to maximize the benefit of the waste system Solid municipality and stand on the transfer and localization of advanced foreign technology in the safe waste disposal field, ” said reports.

In addition, the waste-to-energy project is one of the projects planned to be implemented among eight projects in 8 governorates during the coming period through Egyptian and foreign private sector companies and alliances.

The meeting also witnessed the ongoing efforts regarding the investment packages under the Investment Law for implementation with companies working in Integrated Waste Management.

Moreover, the proposal of municipal waste recycling plants for the new waste system “create-manage”.

In her remarks, Yasmin Fouad, the Minister of the Environment, affirmed the state’s commitment to supporting recycling, processing and safe disposal of waste and to work on implementing a sustainable plan to close random pranks and eliminate accumulation by establishing several new recycling plants.

In the end, Major General Hisham Amina pointed out the intention of the Ministry of Local Development to push the implementation of infrastructure projects of the system in various governorates and humiliate any challenges in this regard in implementation of the instructions of President Abdul Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, on raising the efficiency of the system and overcoming the problems of waste accumulation and safe disposal.
