Bhutan: More than 400 DeSuups (the highest form of the voluntary act in Bhutan) participated in a half-day-long maintenance, cleaning and garden development activity in Norzin Lam in the capital of Bhutan, Thimphu, yesterday.

The cleaning and maintenance activity was organized as part of the Thimphu Greening and Beautification programme, under which the DeSuups not only clean and give a better picture to the capital city but also spread cleanliness awareness of the need for collective efforts of the people in keeping the nation clean.

As per the reports, the DeSuups were divided largely into around 28 groups which carried out the beautification works and activities along Norzin Lam. During the process, the DeSuups were assigned different duties such as flowers reorganizing in the gardens, railing repairing and repainting, along with footpath beautification.

As per the Chief Planning Officer, Tandin Dorji, at the office of DeSuung, the programme is focused on implementing the awareness campaign along with encouraging the residents to join the mission to maintain a green and clean environment in the capital city.

He further added that the programme is focusing more on spreading awareness. Young volunteers at DeSuups work and residents of Dzongkhags should also come forwards and take responsibility for following the mission. The volunteers must take up the maintenance work on the shops, houses or streets in their nearby areas.

He stressed that this way, everyone would be able to contribute to the clean environment of the nation. He called the activities a real national service towards fulfilling the vision of Majesty the King. Furthermore, as per the DeSsuung officials, the programme will be taking place in other districts as well, among which one DeSuups said that the residents should act responsibly for their waste.

A DeSuup named Tshering said that most of the waste is household generated, which cannot be controlled or maintained all the time, so people should take action and take care of their household waste which would help in the beautification of the town.

Additionally, the office of DeSuung implemented the programme in association with the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry, Royal Commission for Urban Development, Royal Project, Thimphu Thromde and TashichhoDzong Garden Project.
